Lady Pioneers Defeat Jackson

Jackson, MI – The Delta women's basketball team traveled to Jackson on Wednesday to face the Jets of Jackson Community College in an MCCAA crossover matchup and emerged victorious with a 75-71 victory.  The Pioneers had defeated Jackson last month at home, 78-66.  With the win, Delta improves to 5-4 on the season while Jackson drops to 2-10. 

Delta jumped out to a big lead after one quarter, 22-12 thanks to the hot shooting of freshman guard Nyashia Williams who ended with a game best 19 points on the evening.  But Jackson would climb back in it by halftime and only trailed by three heading in to the final stanza. 

With the score 73-71 and seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter, Williams stepped to the line and drained a pair of free throws to seal the deal for Delta and complete the season sweep of the Jets.
"Composure has been key the past couple of games," said head coach Kelly Miller.  "We were able to maintain our lead throughout and our free throws were big for us." 
On the night, the Pioneers were 18 of 23 (78%) from the line.  Kenisha Newsom contributed on the offensive end with 14 points and 7 boards while Jenna Szostak added 13 points.
"After suffering back to back home loses last weekend in the Lynn Conway Classic, it was good to go on the road and get a win.  Hopefully, that trend continues tomorrow."

The Pioneers will travel to Mid-Michigan Community College in Mt Pleasant on Thursday to face the #19 ranked Lakers in a rematch of a contest from November 14th.  Delta lost that game on their home floor, 59-49.  Tip off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
