Lady Pioneers Knock Off Mott

Exact revenge for early season loss

Flint, MI – The women of Delta traveled to Flint on Wednesday night to take on the Mott Community College Bears in a MCCAA Eastern Conference basketball battle that saw Delta squeak out a seven point victory, 52-45.  The win avenged an earlier loss to Mott back on January 20th when the Bears escaped with a three point victory. 

This time around, it was the DC defense that led the way as the Pioneers limited Mott to just 18 first half points while collecting 15 steals.  Neither team did much offensively, however, as Delta scored just 21 of their own in the first half.
"Shots weren't falling but our defense never let up," said head coach Kelly Miller.
Mott entered the final stanza up 32-30 before Delta outscored them 22-13 in the fourth for the victory.  Three players scored in double figures for DC led by Jayde Abenth with 15 while Jenna Szostak and Brooke Schutte each chipped in with 12 apiece. 
 

"Our bench stepped up on both defense and rebounding," said Miller.  "when we got in some foul trouble different girls took care of the ball made sure the game never got out of hand."

The win ups the Pioneer record to 16-10 overall on the year and 9-5 in the conference, good enough for fourth place. But they still have their work cut out for them if they want to host a first-round regional game as the Ocelots of Scholcraft visit Delta on Saturday.

"Schoolcraft is a tough team. That's why they are nationally ranked and top of the conference," said Miller when asked about the 21-point beating Delta took back on January 23rd at the hands of Schoolcraft. 
"That team they faced is not the team we are now and there will be a huge difference from the effort that was shown in our first meeting."
Delta has already qualified for a post-season berth.  Now they are looking for home court advantage.
 

"We have to do our jobs and take care of home court. Seeing that we host the regional tournament we want to play at home first round and the first step to that is finishing the next two games strong!"

Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 1pm in the Pioneer Gymnasium.
